Gratuitously Cute Baby Pictures From Some of Our Favorite Farms
For New Yorkers, the beginning of March means the occasional late snowstorm, leaping over slush-filled pits and pockets at intersections, enjoying longer days, and wishing for spring to just hurry up and come already. On the farms that we work with at Saxelby Cheesemongers, March means the beginning of kidding and lambing season, and a cacophonous kickoff to another year of cheesemaking.

While we hem and haw over the wacky weather, our farmers are out there in the barn helping hundreds of new lambs and goats into the world. March on a goat or sheep dairy is a riotous, exhilarating, and exhausting time. Goats and sheep typically have twins (sheep can have up to four lambs at a time!) so it doesn’t take much math to imagine how a dairy with 100 mature milking goats or 100 sheep looks like at this time of the year.

In the next four weeks, we’ll begin to see the first cheesy signs of spring  in our cheese case – fresh chevre and delicate bloomy goat cheeses. They are to the cheese world what asparagus is to the farmer’s market. Yummm…. We can’t wait!
So let’s give three cheers to our farmers – Hip hip hooray!! For doing the hardest job out there… We cheese lovers appreciate you and the work that you do immensely. And we love the cute baby pics. Keep ’em coming!
